Today on my way in to work I was listening to the people poll on the Russ Parr morning show and apparently Tyra recently had a show about parents bleaching their babies’ skin to be lighter. This right here is pure craziness! Why anyone would bleach their skin who’s initials are not MJ is beyond me, but to do that to a child? And the people who were calling in to comment were interesting. A lot of them were saying that they would rather have a dark skinned child than light because they were teased when they were younger for being light skinned. Shouldn’t you just be glad you’re child came out with skin period? Then some were saying that they were always teased about being dark and had comments made about them like “you’re pretty to be dark”.
But my question is in today’s society where races are intermingling with each other, is skin color really that much of a big deal amongst our own people? Does being light make you better or more favored then being dark or vice versa? I have a daughter who is lighter complected and has what many call “good hair”, but is she gonna get labeled or picked on because of something she had no control over? I mean we about to have a black president who is mixed and we still have this type of mentality amongst ourselves! Maybe we need to revisit Spike Lees School Daze. Your thoughts?
