It was back in 2004 when I got a phone call:
Me: Hello?
Friend: TAMIKA! DID YOU WATCH OPRAH?!
Me: No.
Friend: GIRL, THERE WAS A MAN ON THERE TODAY. A NICE LOOKING BLACK MAN, LOOKED LIKE ANY MAN YOU SEE ON THE STREET. HE WAS TALKING ABOUT MEN WHO ARE WITH THEIR WOMEN IN THE DAYTIME AND HAVE SEX WITH OTHER MEN IN THE NIGHT TIME! SOMETHING CALLED "THE DOWN LOW"!
Me:...
Friend: I WISH I WOULD FIND OUT "DONNELL" IS ON THE DOWN LOW. I'LL STAB HIS BIG ASS WITH A RUSTY KNIFE AND BURY HIS ASS UNDER THE HOUSE!
Me: Hmph.
To my credit, I was awakened by this call.
Back in 2004 when J.L. King was on the Oprah Winfrey Show to promote his book "On the Down Low", I didn't know what to think. He was sharing his story of having anonymous sex with other men while being married to his wife. I couldn't help but think that King was ignorant as hell. He kept trying to use big words and make these strident points but failed miserably every time. His performance on the Oprah show was a big factor with me not buying his book. Judging from the "WTF did I read?" reactions that I received from women who did read the book, I glad to have dodged that literary fuckery.
Now, J.L. King, the self-appointed saviour of women, black women in particular, is releasing a DVD entitled "The Top 10 Signs of Down Low Behavior" which is rated "'A' for adult content...for those that don't want to avoid falling for a DL man." **eye roll**
I was too through with J.L. King when he said that he isn't gay.
He was sitting in his office, a room full of gay paraphernalia and actually said that with a straight face.
Okay, I don't know what exactly "gay paraphernalia" is, but I'm pretty sure it can include paintings and photos of nude men posted all over. And J.L. King's office was full of them. His wife divorced him and he never really said whether or not he still dates women (And what woman is willing to date him? What man for that matter?), and he still has sex with men...I'm gonna go out on a limb and proclaim that J.L. King is certified geigh.
...Anyway this classic opportunist is continuing to "save our daughters" by also releasing a fiction novel named "Love On A Two-Way Street". According to King's website, "The novel chronicles the encounters of a music mogul who is on the down-low and his interactions with a successful woman, and powerful industry men."
Now you know what I think, what do you think about J.L. King and the "empire" he has created? Is helping to save women by exposing the "DL" lifestyle or is he profiting from fear mongering?
